Women's UK sizes run 4 numbers higher than US: a US 6 is a UK 10, a US 10 is a UK 14. Men's tops use the same chest measurement in both the US and UK, so no conversion is needed there.

For women, S is roughly a US 4–6 (EU 36–38), M a US 8–10 (EU 40–42), and L a US 12–14 (EU 44–46). For men's tops, M is about a 38–40 inch chest and L a 42–44 inch chest. Alpha sizes cover a range, so the numeric size is more precise.
